Why You Should Book A Trip To Melbourne (And What To Do There)

16th March 2019

Melbourne is Australia’s second biggest city and the capital of Victoria, on the southeast coast of the nation. Founded initially by British explorers in 1803, the city experienced its first major growth during the 1851 Gold Rush, and today it’s a thriving cosmopolitan metropolis.

Consistently ranking as one of the most livable cities, Melbourne is a beautiful city of hidden laneways, Victorian buildings built with funds from the Gold Rush, and lovely promenades lined with trees. The city is lovely to explore, but also has many wonderful events to visit as well. It’s most well-known for its sports, and is home to the Australian Open and the Melbourne Cup horse race.

Experience The Diverse Flavors Of Melbourne

As a cosmopolitan center, Melbourne has no shortage of delicious foods from every culture, and many famous Australian chefs call the city home. But what truly puts them a cut above (or maybe we should say cup above) is their coffee. Melbourne is one of the leading coffee capitals of the world and is routinely ranked as the best place in the entire world to get a cup of coffee. The cafe culture in Melbourne is as dedicated as it gets to the point that having an Australian barista is a sign of pride in other nations. You can find many wonderful cafes while wandering through the city on your own, but for the quickest taste of what they offer, there are many Melbourne Coffee Tours available.

Additional things to check out in the city are Federation Square, where you’ll find the city’s iconic railway station, first opened in 1910, as well as a small shopping area. If you want to experience more of Melbourne’s shopping, make your way over the Chapel Street, most known for its vast range of high quality clothes. Alternatively, Bridge Road in Richmond is known for its outlet shopping, for those less willing to spend big. Another great shopping spot is the Queen Victoria Markets, the heart of food in Melbourne since 1878. It’s home to the city’s best selections of cheeses, olives, and smoked meats, and it is housed in a gorgeous Victorian building that is a shining example of that era’s architecture.

Day Trips And Drives From Melbourne, Australia

For a bit of a change of pace, check out any of the wonderful sites in the surrounding area, just a quick drive from Melbourne.

Not too far from the city is one of Australia’s most iconic coasts, The Great Ocean Road. The drive takes you along the coast, along steep cliffs and through amazing sites, like the Twelve Apostles of the London Arch. If wildlife is more your thing, take the journey over to Phillip Island to hang out with some penguins as they rest along the coast. You can also visit one of the parks on the island to see koalas in the wild, or even hand feed a kangaroo.

For some amazing hiking, check out the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley. It is a beautiful mountain range on the outskirts of the city, and is full of breathtaking scenery as you explore the rainforest of ash trees. It’s a wonderful destination, with many towns in between, as well as the Puffing Billy steam train.
